Excerpt
Sigma-Delta Modulation (SDM) is a method for encoding high resolution signals into lower resolution signals using pulse-density modulation. This technique has found increasing use in modern electronic components such as analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog converters, frequency synthesizers, switched-mode power supplies and motor controls. One of the earliest and most widespread uses of SDM is in data conversion. An analog-to-digital converter (ADC) or digital-to-analog converter (DAC) circuit which implements this technique can relatively easily achieve very high resolutions using low-cost complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) processes, such as the processes used to produce digital integrated circuits. In this paper, a field programmable gate array (FPGA)-based prototype of first order Sigma-Delta modulator is presented. VHDL language is used to design and simulate the prototype. The implementation is performed using Xilinx Spartan-3 FPGA. The algorithms and implementation steps used are discussed in details. This study shows that although FPGA does not offer optimized hardware implementation compared to application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC), it allows short design time and enable verification of algorithm in hardware quickly.
